The washed out color palette is not so nice. Hopefully therell be an update. Thanks for the video that this is now possible with the Ossc. Wouldve missed it 😮
Yeah the palette should be fixed with the next OSSC firmware update
Back in the days I had 128D. It was very easy to just add a resistor, throttling the noisy fan. machine was running for years without any issues.
Great work. But why?
How come this video is in 4:3?
I’d love to see a reverse of this so that I can game on my 80’s console TV
When I was about 12, I got put on restriction for skipping school and part of that restriction meant I wasn't allowed to play video games. I dug out an old black and white TV from the back of my closet to try and sneak some nintendo but the TV was so old that it had no connectors built in to it. All it had was 2 screws for a twin lead wire that you could hook up to an antenna. I stripped the ends on a small bit of twin lead and shoved the frayed wires into the back of the Nintendo's AV port. It had a bit of static and you had to keep the wires shoved in there just right but Mario was back in business.
Can you reverse back to 804?
Should be possible by pushing the original vendor.bin file back to the scope
Do you know if it works with the Commodore 16 or Plus 4 series? Do you have either one of those you could test it on?
I have those machines but they are not supported. Every machine (or video IC) requires a custom digitizer board and c0pperdragon has not made one for the TED.
@@TheRetroChannel oh ok. Thanks for the update. Cheers.
Is that additional signal the only difference between old on OSSC and new one? What wonders me is why the jailbars are no longer present. BTW. Do you have by chance workig upper head for C128? Mine have that flexible support broken.
Doing the wire mod does disable the 2nd LED on the OSSC. Its functionality is restored on the v1.8 boards, but apart from that there is practically no difference. There are no jailbars as the video (Lumacode) is grenerated by the VIC-IIe digitizer. The OSSC or RGBtoHDMI is required to decode (and scale) the Lumacode signal. And no, no spare drive heads sorry.
@@TheRetroChannel Thank you for your reply. At first i thought that VIC-II-dizer just encodes analog signal from VIC-II, (thus my surprise) but it seems i was wrong.
@@TheRetroChannel No spare heads? I meant a head with only upper one working and lower one bad, unless it's possible to move coils between them. I think i saw such one in your video about fixing 1571, but if you don't have it anymore (lower bad, upper good), it's fine. I'm going to mod my OSSC to according to your video, although i have V1.6. I wonder if i would find out about lumacode feature if not for your video. Pleasant, educational and useful stuff you're making here.
Oh yeah, that drive went towards fixing another (I didn't do a video about that repair). But I can say there is no way to swap the heads themselves between upper and lower.
Sadly my OSSC lasted about 2 weeks before it gave up the ghost while Playing Ultima IV on the Amiga 500 😩
Ouch
DVI can carry audio. It’s not part of the spec so we call it “enhanced DVI” but the HDMI device on the other end is none the wiser. 1.5 or earlier OSSCs with didn’t do audio either whether you got the HDMI or DVI version. The only difference was that you needed assemble your own DIY OSSC kit for HDMI back then since the creators didn’t want to run afoul of HDMI licensing. Neither DVI nor HDMI OSSCs supported audio until we got new firmware with a mod board from Borti4938 (Peter Bartmann). Obviously, they rolled the upgrade into 1.6+ versions of the OSSC when they also started selling them preassembled with physical HDMI ports, but it was never tied to that port. You really could get an HDMI OSSC with no audio before they started selling 1.6.
That said, my OSSC is DVI (1.5) with Borti’s upgrade board and the new 1.8 LumaCode modifications. Instead of using a DVI to HDMI dongle I use a long, braided, DVI to HDMI cable. As long as I never disconnect the DVI end I never even have to think about it being DVI. It is for all intents and purposes an HDMI unit.
I literally subscribed to you when you NES video came out, anticipating this video, and even shared that one around… only to see this as “recommended” instead of in my subscription feed. Sure enough: I wasn’t subscribed even though I’m 1,000% sure I subscribed before.
You think they could also do the same for the XRGB-Mini ? I don't really need to be buying another Upscaler ?
The Framemeister? No chance
Amazing work, video, and product! So you think there will be an upgrade where you can save the settings, or did I miss that? Thanks for sharing
You must have missed it. I saved the settings after setting up the 128
@@TheRetroChannel oh, will have to rewatch and give it another thumbs up! Thanks!
Whats the use if a diode and is it really necessary?
Thats so confusing for a noob with a DHO804... For FW 1.01 you need Golang and for FW 1.02 you need ADB? Why are you mixing this?
That LumaCode output is so impressive in how clean it looks! It looks so perfect that it might as well be coming out of an emulator.
@07:10 I'm confused Balena Etcher is also available for Windows ... so what is your reason to use a complete other program?
12MB vs 172MB installer.
I use Win32DiskImager although annoyingly I have to quit google drive otherwise it freezes.
@@TheRetroChannel Ah ok so the Win32 installer is way smaller. OK got it.
2.5mm? Do you use powered IEMs? That's the only reason I have those plugs around. Thanks for showing all the troubleshooting.
They were probably in a random box of parts that I've picked up over time
🍪

@@TheRetroChannel Didn't get the notification until I got off the phone. My life is in shambles now 😢
You're forgiven, this time
I think that's the cleanest, most jail bar free, C128 screen I've seen. Love this.
Very nice! I ordered the lumacode-boards for all my retro stash after your last video, and now I need to update my OSSC as well. Thanks for the explanation and video capture of the menus on how to actually get the signal nice and sharp.
Nice. Just don't forget to save those profiles
Northern Hemisphere view. That's gold Jerry, Gold!!!!
Thanks Bania
I suppose the good news for me is that I don't need to replace any of these chips. I used a burn in cart on my Super Famicom and it passes all tests. Gonna have to open it up and check on the caps.
This...looks like it has the worst of both worlds between internal video-out mods and external upscalers, with none of the unique upsides of either.
Electrical tape will leave a sludgy mess after some time.
This would be awesome if they brought it to the SNES
Surprised you managed to disassemble it without slicing a finger. I swear Nintendo made the edges of the RF shield as sharp as possible to punish anyone who dares to disassemble a NES.
Hello: Really liked your video. Will DOSBox-x handle Jane's USAF (2 CDs), MS Combat Flight Simulator (CFS1) or Star Trek Academy (6 CDs)
A few years ago I installed a Hi-Def NES along with a NESessity 1.4 board in my NES and not once have I looked back (okay one time; when I saw Hogan's Alley at the vintage game store in my town and wished I could use a Zapper with a modern TV). So happy to see there are new HDMI solutions on the horizon. I just wish something would be done for the SNES!
thanks
Not practical. Starting to resemble a MegaDrive with its many add-ons. Trying to reinvent the wheel so to speak. Its aight, I guess, its a money pit at this point. The point of these video mods is to keep the shelf uncluttered, everything to be kept inside the case. What's the point of capture cards and upscalers? Precisely to avoid all of this wiring mess. The amount of time wasted just to set up and the money that will be spent, get a proper upscaler instead. Not very practical, but those who miss the MegaDrive and its add-ons, rejoice. Not worth the effort.
Can this do 240p resolution, or is there a way to get RGB instead of HDMI so we can use something like the Retrotink 5x or 4k for the HDMI + Masks/Profiles?
Can I hook up vga or scart to that?
1 raspberry pie can emulate everything itself. Instead, you'd rather add 5 more cords, a mono splitter, an audio injector adapter, 3 separate power supplies, 2 more pcbs and a raspberry pie!😂
Yes. #EmulationIsForQuitters
Jesus HDMI Christ this is brilliant.
Very nice..thank you..
Basic soldering skills but a bunch of spaghetti wires. I mean now you must power the console, two external devices, have 2 HDMI cables, audio cables. They should just have people put the whole assembly inside the nes and have an HDMI slot cut in the back. I've never regretted my HiDef-NES but now ai realize how lucky I am to have one and the NES works like it was just built like that.
Did you watch the whole video? Once they add audio support you'll just feed composite audio and video to a scaler. Also, you can easily fit the RGB2HDMI inside the console or just attach it to the back or side and run a very short composite cable to it.
@@brandogg the RGB2HDMI will still require power though no? Anyway as of now this is feasable and since you don't have to take out both CPU and PPU to leech their datas into an external board it is cool, the whole go inside the RF unit stuff is kinda bad though, unless you just cut out the traces, this isn't too bad. It's nice to see modern solutions for older systems and get pixel perfect gaming. Having installed both a PSDigital and a Hidef-Nes in my retro consoles it's really changing the game. We still need a better light gun solution though.
How is that better than Retrotink2x?
My first computer capable of running dos or win 3.1 was a presario cds 866. I still have its rough shape corpse. But have a great presario 833 that runs fine. And there is like nothing for the 800 line.. 500s 900s 700s all day long, but no restore for 800s. Still looking for the 197005 cache module... Thank you so much for this video. I know something out of it will help.
I hope you understand that micro pie can emulate in HD up to Ps2 games . Just ruined a collectable console valuble in original condition only.
Lmao
Nice. Love seeing old machines given some attention.
This looks like it might introduce some lag.. I wonder what this feels like to play. Awesome idea!
Not enough lag for me to notice, but I'll do some proper tests soon
@@TheRetroChannelobviously things like the zapper wouldn’t work but if you’re doing this mod then you probably don’t have a compatible TV anyway.
Yeah, a CRT is still the way to go for lightguns, and my go-to for general gaming. This is more for those who don't have or don't want a CRT. Or when getting a clean capture is preferred, like for UA-cam videos and streaming
No NES here but this this looks amazing :D
21:45 the left one looks better
I just checked both of my NES decks' expansion slot... both are completely devoid of spiders. Is it too late to ask Nintendo for a full refund? 🤣
Hey! Great video! How about reading Commodore 128 KERNAL chips (28 pin?) I am not able to read them using TL-866II device.
It should be possible to read them as a 27C256 without any adaptors, you just need to turn off pin detect
@@TheRetroChannel yes. I found it by myself to turn off pin detect and it works, thanx for the answer :)
The service menu on Sony TVs is a godsend. I wish my Mitsubishi had one (maybe it does, but I can’t find any info).
Hold up - all we need to do on NTSC for expanded audio is bridge a couple pins with a resistor? The expanded audio will pipe through the regular ol' output jacks as usual?
Yes, assuming you're using an everdrive
@@TheRetroChannel indeed! N8 Pro. I'll have to give this one a go! I wish getting RGB out was that easy 🤣
ther is a a/v to hdmi cable but you need 2 audio and 1 video plug.
